The sun is shining, the asphalt is calling, the soul is longing for change - the season of auto travel has come. When you want to feel the taste of the open road without leaving your home, films are always at hand.

Travel can be a unique event, bring lasting impressions and invaluable experience, whether it be a few hours or years spent traveling. In films, road trips are used as a powerful vehicle for storytelling and are often used as allegories to remind you that the destination is not always as important as the process of reaching it. Fellow travelers locked in a cramped metal box, unexpected encounters and dangers have all played a role in some of the most memorable pictures.

Travel films span a wide range of genres, from slapstick to sentimental dramas and everything in between. There is something for everyone. The selection we have presented below is not only highly regarded by critics, but also includes several epic masterpieces with gorgeous backdrops, from the American Midwest to the Russian hinterland. Without further ado, here are 20 movies that will fill you with the spirit of adventure and inspire you to hit the road - or at least watch another movie on the list.

Supernatural (2005 to present)

"We have weapons and we will find you." The series rightfully occupies the top place: its main characters - Sam and Dean - have been on the road for 15 years. Fighting with evil spirits and constantly faced with inexplicable phenomena, many of which are based on American urban legends and folklore, they have been saving the world in general and ordinary mortals in particular for 15 seasons. Unsurprisingly, the Winchester brothers have become favorites of millions of fans - as have their black 1967 Chevy Impala.

Truckers (2000-2012)

The cult Russian television series about the adventures of trucker partners, truck drivers Sasha (Vladislav Galkin) and Fyodor Ivanovich (Vladimir Gostyukhin). Money, risk, KamAZ and the romance of long-distance roads. It's incredible how much can happen in the endless Russian expanses!

Rat Race (2001)

Thrilling remake of the classic comedy It's Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). John Cleese plays an eccentric casino owner - he designs a competition where six teams vie with each other in a two million dollar race from a locker hundreds of miles away. The only rule in this race is no rules. A film about greed, manipulation and bad driving. Crazy, dirty and mostly stupid, but beautiful road comedy.

Accident (1997)

Cast - Kurt Russell, J.T. Walsh, Kathleen Quinlan. A couple travels from Massachusetts to California when their jeep breaks down in a desolate part of the Southwest. The wife accepts the truck driver's offer to take her to the nearest cafe, from where she can call for help. When the husband manages to start the car, he gets to the cafe, but the driver claims that he has never met either him or his wife before. The husband begins a frantic search for his missing wife.

Zombieland (2009)

Here, the characters are not crawling around the country on a guided tour - they are desperately seeking refuge. There isn't much to learn in frantic attempts to escape the walking dead, but Zombieland is something special. The post-apocalyptic comedy follows a group of survivors trying to find an island free from zombies.

As with any good journey, the film breaks down barriers and builds relationships. Squeezed into a yellow Hummer, fellow travelers will learn all about the rules of survival (tie your shoelaces in a double knot, guys), human weaknesses and the correct treatment of Bill Murray. Adventures, emotions and a bunch of colorful zombies await you.

Harassment (2019)

Hans, a self-confident and stubborn man, travels with his wife and children to their parents. It was a bad idea to provoke a van driver who is not moving fast enough and slowing down all traffic on the road. Convinced of his righteousness, our hero challenges his opponent and makes a dangerous maneuver, but, unfortunately, this backfires. The head of the family has no idea that a dangerous serial killer is driving the sluggish white van. The psychopath is about to chase his family, and the routine family trip develops into a chilling chase.

By plane, by train, by car (1987)

Two days before Thanksgiving, marketing consultant Neil rushes home to his family in Chicago. His companion turns out to be an overly chatty clerk of Cases. The flight is canceled and the incompatible couple is forced to find their own way to Chicago - by any means necessary. As usual, things go wrong, and in the worst possible way. A crazy adventure begins with a series of hilarious nightmares.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

This is an expanded understanding of "road travel". Bizarre character explorations and tales of self-discovery are great, but sometimes you just need non-stop adrenaline-pumping action. This is definitely what you get in Fury Road, the latest installment in George Miller's apocalyptic franchise.

This time Max (Tom Hardy) is captured by the tyrant - the ruler of the desert fortress, and his fate is unenviable. Spectacular footage awaits the viewer, including a gorgeous chase scene through the hot sands. Warriors launching spears of fire into trucks, sandstorms destroying caravans and a faceless man playing a guitar from a flamethrower ...

Unique dangers enhance everything we love about travel movies while adding detail to some of the best action movies we've ever seen.

Duel (1971)

Starring the valiant 1970 Plymouth Valiant Signet, 1955 Peterbild 281. In Steven Spielberg's debut film, a certain David Mann intends to drive his car through California. When he tries to overtake a LNG carrier, his driver is offended. At first, he just annoys David, constantly overtaking him and slowing down. Then he begins to play psychological games with him, persecuting and terrorizing.

The story is viewed from David's perspective, with comments that he thinks to himself. The plot is unpretentious, but tense and exciting. The fact that Spielberg doesn't show the truck driver's face is perhaps the most frightening aspect. By the way, Spielberg was doing some sort of "casting" looking for a suitable truck, and the Peterbild 281 of 1955 was recognized as the most sinister.

Vacation (1983)

Clarke drives the entire family over rough terrain to Wally's World, leaving chaos in its wake. By the will of fate, the journey will soon fall apart, there will be failures at every step, and the desired amusement park will be closed. The head of an extraordinary family drives himself to the brink of madness, trying to overcome a series of trials and tribulations in the last attempt to fulfill the promise given to the family about a fun vacation. If you like light-hearted films, you can't go wrong with National Lampoon's Vacation, a family comedy about a journey that goes wrong.

Stagecoach (1939)

In 1880, there was also transport, and therefore travel adventures. In the film of the same name, passengers are transported from Arizona to Lordsburg, New Mexico by a stagecoach. The plot follows nine strangers who begin their journey in different ways and unite as they travel together. Despite some hideous Native American portrayal, this western from director John Ford starring John Wayne is a masterclass in filmmaking.

The Hitchhiker / Hitchhiker (1953)

Two men who are about to go fishing pick up a hitchhiker, who turns out to be a murderer who has escaped from prison. The simple trip of Roy (Edmond O'Brien) and Gilbert (Frank Lovejoy) to the fishing spot turns into a survival game.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Adventure of two idiots on rough terrain. For Harry and Lloyd, every day is full of surprises, especially when they give up the dream of a pet store full of worms and try to return the lost portfolio with a lot of money to its rightful owner in Colorado.

The crime syndicate is also chasing money, and the safety of friends is in question. The crazy duo will not get to Aspen before traveling a third of the distance in the wrong direction and confusing everyone along the way. Silly, but fun. Thanks to Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, who so convincingly played the idiots driving around in the form of a dog.

Great Races (1965)

At the turn of the 20th century, several colorful characters embark on a motor rally from New York to Paris. The fun begins. Lawlessness and road adventure abound as crazy professional racers compete against each other in an all-star intercontinental race.

Wow Ride (2001)

A film with the immensely talented Steve Zahn. A college student goes on a long trip after his girlfriend, Venna. Unfortunately, he has to share the journey with his older brother Fuller. He uses an old car radio to cruelly play a lone trucker for fun. But truck drivers are tough guys, and they have their own view of "innocent road pranks". Someone will have to regret their behavior.

Death Race 2000 (1975)

Starring David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. In the near future, death races will be a huge sporting event. Participants receive points for knocking down people - passers-by and distraught fans who sacrifice themselves to the racers. The dissenters try to put an end to the immoral game and introduce one of the followers into the race with the intention of eventually killing the organizer-president.

A dynamic cult film. The old sci-fi action movie was revamped by Paul Anderson in 2008, creating a remake of Death Race and giving the lead role to Jason Statham.

Catch before midnight (1988)

Bounty hunter Jack Walsh sets out to find and return the mortgagee and former Mafia accountant for a $ 100,000 fee. However, the Mafia and the FBI have their own plans for the reward - as does Marvin, a rival bounty hunter.

While the epic journey uses more than cars, there are many dramatic highway-related plots. Midnight Run is widely regarded as one of the greatest travel movies of all time, thanks to its extremely interesting characters and the wonderful chemistry between them. Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin gave the action comedy a special chic.

Convoy (1978)

A mile-long column of protesting truck drivers rushes down the highway in Arizona towards the Mexican border. The intense action climbs to an incredible climax with one of the most devastating car crash scenes ever filmed by a filmmaker.

Easy Rider (1969)

Custom Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide motorcycles are not cars, but there is a road and a lot of travel. According to the trailer, Easy Rider is "the story of a man who went looking for America and couldn't find it," although of course that's not all. It is worth seeing the cool performance of Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson. By the way, only one bike from Easy Rider has survived to date - "Captain America". The rest were stolen before filming ended and have not been seen since.

Until I played in the box (2008)

Starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The corporate billionaire and the working class mechanic have nothing in common other than incurable diseases. While in the same hospital room, they decide to leave it and do whatever they ever wanted to before they die. In the process, both become friends and, as in their youth, enjoy life. Again, this is not a traditional road trip movie, but highly recommended to watch.

Conclusion

As long as there are cars, so many films about travel. From serious to delightfully stupid, they have been a staple of world cinema over the past century, and the samples we have presented are just a few. But while some pieces (like the ones on this list) remain classics, others (we're looking at you, Alvin and the Chipmunks: A Traveling Chip) are best kept in the archives.
